The short answer
Rummy is about building your own hand; poker is about the decisions you make against other players. If you enjoy reading people and managing risk, poker rewards that. If you prefer pattern-building and card memory, rummy feels more natural.
Side-by-side comparison
| Poker | Rummy | |

| Players | Usually 2–9 at a table | Usually 2–6 at a table |
| Cards | 52-card deck, shared community cards in Hold'em | One or two decks with jokers |
| Core skill | Betting decisions, odds, reading opponents | Card memory, discards, building melds |
| Pace | Many short hands; tournaments run for hours | Each deal ends when a player declares |
| Live in Gurgaon / NCR | Private clubs and organised tournaments | Mostly social and home games |
Is skill involved?
In 1968 the Supreme Court of India described rummy as a game requiring considerable skill. Poker's legal status depends on the state and the format. Rules for online play with money changed substantially in 2025, so always check current central and state law before playing.
