Poker Terminology: An Introductory Reading Guide

Poker terminology on the existing site includes ante, blind, button, check-raise, nuts, river and tilt. This introduction groups the learning topics already available rather than inventing definitions that have not been supplied or reviewed.

Betting actions

The poker-rules overview introduces fold, check, call, bet and raise. These are actions, not names of poker hands. Use the rules guide to distinguish decisions during play from the order of hand categories.

Hold’em round names

Pre-flop, flop, turn and river are the betting-round sequence identified in the Texas Hold’em guide. That guide also distinguishes two private cards from five shared community cards.

Tournament terms

The tournament introduction discusses starting chips, blinds and intervals. Use the event directory separately for dates, formats and registration information. A general term does not establish the arrangements of a particular event.

Hand names

The hand-rankings reference lists the sequence from Royal Flush to High Card. These categories should be read separately from actions and betting rounds.

Definitions still needed

This page needs reviewed definitions and examples for ante, button, check-raise, nuts and tilt before it can be presented as a complete glossary. The current introduction directs readers to existing material without claiming those missing explanations are already available.
